Alpha Alpha Tau Omega Journey (part 4)

Under Target 5: Global Impact, the Interest Group collected glasses and collected nearly 700 pairs of shoes to date, receiving recognition at the 2019 Cluster II Conference for the second highest number of shoes collected.  The Interest Group donated household items to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore Operation, which partners with Jewish Federation Services to help refugee families. The Interest Group partnered with Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for Winter Fest!, an evening of food and fellowship with refugees, including families from the Congo, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.  Each family was presented with gifts from their wish lists.

AKA Connection is crucial at this turbulent time in our nation’s history. Sorors participated in Delaware AKA Day at the Capitol. Locally, Sorors advocated for resident participation in school board elections, school board referendums, and attendance at Town Council meetings where issues affecting the community are addressed.  In preparation for the 2020 Elections, the Interest Group took steps to receive training as voter registrars, initiate a 2020 M.O.T. Pan-Hellenic Get Out the Vote Campaign, and to educate and engage Sorors and community members, alike, for the 2020 Census. The members set-up Voter Registration at the “Black Lives Matter Rally. In 2021 AKA Statewide Inauguration Day event was held virtually, on which, more than 100 Sorors participated. Later in the year AKA Day at the Capitol was focused on Healthcare and Environmental Justice legislation. The group was able to set the yearlong legislative agenda to include education, racial disparities, and criminal justice reform.

In alignment with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Interest Group promoted Impact Days over the two years.  Sorors highlighted service opportunities such as, MLK Day of Service volunteering at the New Castle County Library System in support of the 1000 Books Challenge for Kindergartner Books Drive, sorting books and sewing pillow case dresses; Pink Goes Red by supporting Epsilon Iota Omega (EIO) Chapter Line Dancing Event, and for the second consecutive year hosting its own Pink Goes Red event featuring International Master Zumba Instructor Travis Algarin; AKA Global Impact Day via donations to Soles4Soles organization and household donations to Habitat for Humanity ReStore; AKA International Day of Prayer by Interest Group Worship at Harvest Christian Fellowship and Seeds of Greatness Churches; and National Caregivers Day via social media.

Recognizing we are stronger together, the Interest Group collaborated with the National Pan-Hellenic Council of New Castle County Delaware (NPHC) Cabaret, NPHC Greek Week, including a community service event at the Sunday Breakfast Mission, and NPHC Showing of Harriet, the movie.  The Interest Group has supported specific member organizations on their signature events, with proceeds benefitting scholarships, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated Black and Gold Ball and Paint and Sip events, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated 84th Grand Meeting & Conclave and Golf Tournament events, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated & Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated M.O.T. Blood Drive & Health Fair; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated High Tea, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated Thanksgiving Raffle, to name a few. AATO History (part 5)
