Alpha Alpha Tau Omega Journey (part 2)

Serving the Community

Julia Watson-Jones, First-Vice President and Program Committee Chairman led a bold service agenda that was inclusive of every aspect of the national sorority targets. Over the course of the two years, Sorors diligently implemented the International Program, “Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service.”

Having donated monies in 2018 to fund the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Scholarship at Delaware State University, the State’s only HBCU, Sorors continued their commitment to the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) initiative in 2019.  Locally, under Target 1: HBCU for Life: A Call to Action, the Interest Group supported and attended the Appoquinimink School District HBCU Fair for the second year in a row, providing a Soror Alumnus Representative/Ambassador for Central State University.  This Soror’s table garnered great interest based on the exemplary display and information presented.  Another high point was a member’s son was awarded admission on-site to Delaware State University.  On a County Level, Sorors supported the first HBCU Scholarship dinner fundraiser, to raise funds for youth from Wilmington seeking to attend an HBCU.  Sorors supported HBCU Week activities, which included a church service, a forum, and a Battle of the Bands during a live broadcast of ESPN’s First Take, and College Fair.  On September 16, 2019, Sorors generously donated to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Educational Advancement Foundation, HBCU, and were pleased to help the Sorority reach its 1 Million Dollar goal, for the second consecutive year.  Sorors continued to demonstrate commitment to the HBCU initiative, by attending the Delaware State University President’s Scholarship Ball, themed “Students First.”  During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Sorors donated $1,480 to the 2020-21 Student Emergency Fund for DSU students and in September of 2020 the Interest Group continued with a virtual HBCU Week and in 2021 there was a collaborative HBCU event with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

In support of Target 2: Womens Healthcare and Wellness, the Interest Group made a one-time $190.08 donation, in advance of the 2019 North Atlantic Regional Conference (NARC), to underwrite the cost of a mammogram.  For the second year, Sorors supported and volunteered at the Beat the Beast High School Football Game, to raise Cancer awareness. Also, for the second consecutive year, the Interest Group invited friends and neighbors to “Every Woman Matters,” a breast and wellness breakfast for all women including breast cancer survivors, to learn more about breast health.  At this event, Middletown, Odessa, and Townsend Pearls of Distinction, educated attendees on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Target 2 initiatives and donated a gift for raffle.  Sorors strived to promote health and wellness by serving healthy snacks at monthly meetings. Sorors also increased their physical fitness levels by exercising together in activities such as yoga, walking, running, kickboxing, tap dancing, and Zumba. Sorors included YogaAKA at the inaugural retreat, to highlight self-care as an important aspect of being an AKA.  The yoga session, instructed by a Soror, was a fun way to encourage fitness. The Pandemic called for extraordinary healthcare measures. The annual Pink Goes Red Zumba event with Master Instructor Travis Algarin was held in 2020 and virtually in 2021.  The Interest Group was able to achieve 10,035,911 steps in 2020 Walking with the Supreme (WWTS). The goal for 2021 has been set for 20,000,000 and Sorors are well on their way.   AATΩ History (part 3)
